Friday, August 22nd begins our group’s 3rd installment of the Skyblock Challenge!  The admin crew has built a new custom multi-player map just for the occasion and we’re excited to announce that we’ll be doing Skyblock 2.1 this go around. You can find more information about Skyblock and Skyblock 2.1 here. This server map is an adaptation created by the server admins. The concept and original Skyblock challenges/maps were thought up by Noobcrew.

skyblockarticle

What is Skyblock? Skyblock is a floating island survival map. On the server, your team will be assigned an island where you’ll be tasked with a list of goals to accomplish (with meager starting supplies) to win the challenge. As previously stated we’ll be using an adaption of  Skyblock 2.1 with additional goals to make the experience slightly more challenging.

 chests

Rules:

  • Teams can be 1-3 players.
  • Do not purposely jump off the island to regenerate your health.
  • Do not attempt to make a bridge to the Island Hub, neighboring islands, or map edge. Each individual island is roughly 2,000 minecraft blocks away from the other. If you are found attempting to bridge islands or the other two areas stated you will be disqualified and removed from the whitelist. This rule goes for Overworld and Netherworld islands.
  • Overworld island can extend up to 100 blocks out from the bedrock block marking the center in any of the 4 compass point directions. You are not restricted as far as height is concerned.
  • Netherworld islands can extend up to 40 blocks out from your nether portal in any of the 4 compass point directions.  You are not restricted as far as height is concerned.
  • If you somehow spawn on a neighbors island either jump off or use their cb to return to the Island Hub to access your island.

Notes:

  • Anvils and enchanting tables will not be provided for you this time around. You can purchase both, as well as a brewstand, at one of the Xp Shops for 50xp levels. KeepInventory is set to false so you will lose your xp when you die.
  • Two XP Item Shops have been set up to allow you access to materials you wouldn’t normally have access to during single player survival. One item, the brewstand, is required for you to meet certain challenge goals.
  • Instead of doing a pumpkin trade for dirt like we’ve done in the past you may purchase grass blocks from one of the two xp shops.  One shop specializes in animals. If you are having a hard time getting animals to spawn on your island (and with the way the map is set up you shouldn’t have issues getting them to spawn naturally if your island is set up to spawn them correctly) you now have the option to purchase animal spawn eggs for an xp cost.
  • If you fail to set up your cobblestone generator correctly and lose your lava you will be given only 1 replacement lava source.
  • If you fail to set up your nether portal correctly you will not get a second chance to do so.
  • If your tree fails to produce saplings the admins will not give you saplings. You may ask other challengers if they have any they’d like to donate to you. **Helpful tip** Natural leaf decay seems to increase your odds of receiving saplings. A little patience goes a long way.
  • If you lose the sand and cacti from your sand island the admins will not replace them. You may ask other challengers to donate sand/cacti should this happen. **Helpful tip** Approaching the sand island from below is the safest option.
  • If you lose the mushrooms from your nether island the admins will not replace them.  Again, you may ask other challengers for donations.
  • Your starting chest only has 2 items in it. As you progress to your sand island and nether islands you’ll “unlock” more chests with additional items.
  • If for any reason you lose your snow blocks they will not be replaced by the admins. You may ask other challengers for donations.

Mini Builders is back!

I know our children have been doing nothing but talk about this, and the wait is over.

We have 2 challenges running over the next few weeks, the second is a big one I won’t go into details about yet, but the first is a warm up to help some of our newest children get used to the Mini Builders area.

For any of you new to Mini Builders, and the ones who already love it, we have made some big changes to the Mini builders rules which can be found here >> http://goo.gl/8B7zzo It is important you go over these with your children so they understand how it all works.

The Challenge

SUMMER SANDBOX CHALLENGE!

This warm up challenge is a nice and easy one (well sort of).

As with previous challenge we like to be assured you have read this article with your children, at the bottom is an agreement which will give you a special password. Once read and the password received all your child will need to do is WHISPER (please don’t say it loud in the chat) it to an admin and they will be shown where to go.

A2014-07-19_13.20.39

2014-07-19_13.20.55

Each child will have a 10 x 10 sand box to get creative with, the only material they are allowed to use is sand. This said, there are plenty of things that can be crafted from sand and these are all allowed to be use in the challenge. This is a great challenge for them to learn some basic crafting recipes the following link is to the wiki page to give them a few ideas:

http://goo.gl/LfifGW

http://goo.gl/al1n3b

Stained glass WILL be allowed on the condition they source the dye themselves, and torches are allowed to light up any structures they create.

There is no limit or theme to this build; they are able to build whatever they want on their own 10 x 10 plot and as high as they want.

Only 1 plot per child.

No griefing other children’s builds!

Sand has been provided for them.

This is a week-long challenge running from the 21st of July to the 28th.

IMPORTANT! The area on which the sand box challenge is created was admin made and the children are advised not to dig down.

Prizes for this challenge:

1st: 3 enchanted books of their choosing* 10 diamonds
2nd 2 enchanted books of their choosing* 10 gold ingots
3rd 1 enchanted book of their choosing* 10 iron ingots
Plus each child (even the winners) will receive a goodies chest just for taking part.

*They will receive a voucher (aka a written book) to be exchanged with an admin when they have decided which enchantment they want.

As always any Mini Builders challenge is about having fun with a little bit of learning thrown in.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to tag me on facebook, just remember I’m in a different time zone, so if it takes me a while to respond I’m probably sleeping.

Welcome to Mini Builders!

Welcome to Mini Builders!

We have some exciting changes, as well as new build challenges planned.

For our newer server members, here is an introduction to Mini Builders:
We started off with a little section of the server where the kids were given their very first kids-only build challenge: building houses. We provided them with basic supplies and they crafted & built something *amazing!*

Mini Builders has grown so much from that first challenge. We now have a hotel, a Christmas build, farms, mines, a market, and a pier with boats. All of these were challenges presented to our server kids. They met & exceeded expectations with their ingenuity & creativity.

One thing we have found with a lot of our server kids is that they don’t always know how to craft things. With that in mind we built a Schoolhouse to show them how. Hogwarts & its crafting recipe classrooms have now replaced that original Schoolhouse. We have every crafting recipe hanging on the walls of those rooms, so the kids can learn how to craft anything, without having to open an internet browser.

The admin team & helpers have most recently added a couple fun builds for the kids:
“Funland”- an indoor “recreation” area,

Funland! Indoor archery, fishing, & boating!

and the “Mini-Games Globe” for hide & seek or role-playing.
(you may have heard an admin or 2 join in the hide & seek fun)

Exciting new changes!

Here’s where the evolution of Mini Builders takes another step.

  1. Materials
In the past one of the biggest rules at Mini Builders was to only use the supplies gathered at Mini Builders for the challenges and builds there. We are now lifting this restriction and allowing the kids to bring supplies from home.
With the previous rule we were providing the kids with some hard to obtain supplies in their shared vault. Now that they can gather supplies from anywhere, we will no longer be providing those supplies for them.
  2. Vaults
With the ever-increasing amounts of prizes & goodies the kids receive for participating in & winning challenges, we have built an individual vault system inside our brand new Money Bin! The kids can store their prizes & supplies in their own special vault.

Scrooge McDuck stops by for a swim once in a while.

  3. Opening the “doors”
Have you ever wondered what Mini Builders really looks like? Now you can come for a visit! Come check out what the kids have built in competition as well as the farms and community they worked on together.
During all build competitions access will again be restricted to just the kids, the admins, & judges. We will open it back up after judging is completed for each competition.

We are excited to share this fun kids area with all for viewing and even shopping in the Mini Market. We have some exciting new build competitions lined up for the kids to occupy some of their summer hours in the near future.

For us in the U.S., our national holiday is almost upon us and we are looking forward to celebrating it together!  Starting July 3rd (sometime around my first cup of coffee), we will open up the Fourth of July Park.  At the park, you will be able to get your free sparklers and Flag map.

With Your Host, Serverus Snape…

With 1.8 just around the corner now, we’re all anxiously awaiting the next snapshot from Mojang to let us in on what’s going to be included in this massive update.

We’ll talk more about how this is going to affect the server but first here’s a video on how this changes gameplay:

There’s actually been some more changes since this video but I’m not going to go into deep detail about bug fixes and small stuff.

Some of you are probably wondering what our plans are for moving forward with 1.8, since the Main server is on Bukkit and it may be some time before we have a stable enough build to migrate over. For comparison’s sake, it took Bukkit 6 months to fully catch up with 1.7.

The good news is that this update does not include nearly the same level of world generation differences as 1.7 did. The bad news is that it includes a huge administration syntax update that plugins will eventually have to conform to in order to be compatible.

The good news is that Mojang has already started to include the necessary code required for this administration change in patches to 1.7 and Bukkit has already started working on it. The bad news is that we can’t tell if all the developers for the plugins we use are on the same schedule.

There’s about a dozen other good news/bad news scenarios that I won’t go into, but it’s a mixed bag for sure. I’m guessing late July, maybe early August, to be around where we will actually move the main server over, provided that 1.8 is launched in May.

HOWEVER…that does not mean we won’t be able to take advantage of 1.8 right off the bat when it launches. I’m going to get to that in a bit, but first let’s talk about what we’re doing to prepare for the update.

The UUID Shuffle

Since Mojang has decided (against all better judgement IMO) to allow name changes for accounts, the system for recognizing a specific account has been changed to an ID system. For example, whereas before I could easily recognize my own account in a plugin setup by seeing YTCrackerz there, now I will be looking for 9ae6fb61-8a69-4b2e-8489-9920904d0655 which, as you can guess, is doubtful that I will memorize it.

My original title for this article was “Mojang and the terrible, horrible, no good very bad decision” but since 1.8 is way more than just the stuff that is going to make me pull my hair out (what little of it I have left) I figured it wasn’t relevant enough to all the awesome new features and epic plans we have for expansion. You guys will love all that I’m sure. In any case though, the UUID thing is not only a big pain for me, but also for the plugin developers, so while we may not be moving the main server over soon, in the background there will be a lot of activity testing this. The possible implications to account security are noteworthy, so I’m not going to implement it until I’m quite sure it’s ready.

For now, I am pulling all your UUIDs with an API tool so you don’t have to worry about providing them to me.

What this DOES mean for you though, is that you will have to have connected to the server at least once 30 days prior to the update in order to remain on the whitelist once the switch is made OR we will also ask in the group and if you respond, you’ll be OK that way too. We’re doing this because, if you are no longer active, and you change your name to something else, that frees up your previous name to be taken by others. While the UUIDs are supposed to prevent name changes from registering an OK with updated, protected servers, we can’t take any chances that there won’t be workarounds to this in the initial launch. A griefer could theoretically take your old name if you change it and, with a mod or exploit, get into servers where the whitelist would have previously kept them out. It’s my job as server admin to prevent all chance of that happening.

Plus if you’ve been off for that long, chances are you’re just clogging up the whitelist anyway at that point. If that’s the case and you’re erased from it, you are of course welcome to request reinclusion through the typical server rules format. No big deal.

Loading New Chunks

This may come as a shock to some of you newer folks, but suffice it to say that our world clocks in at over 10 gigabytes in file size. What does this mean? Well in relation to the amount of chunks already loaded, it means that there is A LOT of previously discovered land on the server that no one has built on.

Why is this relevant? Because new features in 1.8 will not load in chunks that have already been loaded before. We would like to minimize how far out we have to go to get to the new blocks, items and updated biomes in 1.8. For this reason, we are asking people not to explore outside of any direction that goes past the 10,000 coord range. This is a VERY liberal number and should not be hard to refrain from hitting.

Mesas will finally have caves, as will deserts.

Mesas will finally have caves, as will deserts.

If you already have a location out past 10,000 (which should be only a few of you) then we ask that you stick to the area close by and not venture out too far from it while you’re out there. Most people stick relatively close to the command tower, and community builds are typically coordinated so as to be closer in, so the likelihood that someone “accidentally” goes outside that range is low. We will be looking for this in-game, so please be mindful of it.

World Border

We will NOT be imposing a world border. Honestly I wish we had that functionality NOW but it will be helpful going forward I guess. The need for a world border will be mitigated by our choice to go with…

The Alt Server

This is where the article starts getting good. Have you made it this far? If so, good for you, you’ve survived my long-winded rambling.

The alt server, which we typically use for game nights, will be converted to our “1.8 Vanilla Map”. It will not be a Rush Map. It will have a higher mob difficulty, and also a higher frequency of ores (thanks to the new “world sliders” in the update). It will NOT have keepInventory on and it will be considered an expansion of the main server. There are already plans in place to link the two servers via command block in the future, but it won’t be available until both servers can be updated to the 1.8 version of Bukkit.

In a nutshell, once linked, you’ll be able to carry everything over from one server to another. So basically, store up as much as you can on the alt server while the two servers are not linked, and by the time they are connected, you’ll be leagues ahead of the people who didn’t bother.

Upgraded Hosting Plan

With the update, we will be upgrading the alt server to match the specs of the main server. If any of you can recall being on during other major updates, you’ll know that moving back to Vanilla means more lag and more crashes, and the only way we can really mitigate that is to move from the 2GB to the 4GB plan.

No, it does not mean we are taking donations now (and yes I’m still planning on writing that article too at some point). I’m basically letting you know so you’re confident that your time on either server, once Bukkit is on both, will be a similar experience, and therefore worth it to expand onto.

Brave New World

Overall, this is a very exciting time in the history of Some Awesome Minecraft. We look forward to the leap in gameplay that many of you will make. Some of you will embrace the wild new lands that promise riches and danger. For the rest of you who are content with how it is already, you’ll be able to continue enjoying that too.

And for me and the admins, we’ll be a little frazzled for a while with the whole transition, so just keep that in mind 😉

Thanks,
-Serverus
