A Selection of Metaphors from the MCU

Every couple of years I have to have “the talk”. Most people here are used to it. For everyone else, that’s not a sleight against your commitment, it just means we’re not all on the same page yet.

Tonya and I have been running this server for almost 8 years now, still playing with many of the same folks who were here from those first few months. We pride ourselves on that, and use it as a barometer to gauge how we approach the way this place is managed. The result, from a policy standpoint, means implementing much of the decision-making process on the basis of some core values. Values that we’ve been steadfast about since the beginning. Occasionally we get too used to the idea that everybody who plays here knows exactly what this means (including ourselves) so it’s good to hit the pause button every now and then and revisit those values.

Last week’s Facebook thread was my reminder that we were overdue on this, and ultimately it is my responsibility to make sure everyone is up to speed on these things. The admins do their best to get these values across, but at the end of the day this is a message that works best when it comes straight from the top. The fact that we haven’t had to do it in quite a while is simply a testament to the fantastic job that BBC and Moo have been doing for close to a year now.

To be perfectly clear: NOBODY IS IN TROUBLE HERE. If you felt like you were being dressed down in that thread, it just means we’re not on the same page yet, and even if you don’t get my forthcoming nerdy MCU callbacks, my point still comes through. It’s a win-win.

If it’s one thing I’ve learned working with ragtag groups of people on the internet, it’s that conversations being had via any text medium are universally fraught with misconception. This is doubly true for Facebook comment threads, where alacrity often supersedes extrapolation. Memes and tropes often end up where facts and dialogue belong. This is all well and good if everyone gets the references, however they don’t always land across the board.

I certainly count myself among those who have a responsibility to recognize when this is likely to occur. It’s not that I don’t stand behind the points I was trying to make, instead I know I simply need to do a better job explaining them in a way that works for the people I am explaining them TO, and not for the 95% of folks who already get me.

Anyway, let’s get to some half-baked MCU comparisons, shall we?

There’s a hilarious scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming where they have to show a Captain America PSA to the students, but it’s post-Civil War and he’s become a renegade of sorts according to the government. That whole movie is gold really but this particular scene happens to be one of my favorites.

One thing you can always rely on from Steve Rogers is that he’s always going to act on what he believes is best, while still adhering to a moral code. He does evolve over the course of the movies, but there’s a set of core values there that he maintains throughout. Sticking to your guns often comes with inevitable fallout, and I won’t try to pretend I’m infallible, but it’s critical (and easier in the long run) for everyone if they know what I’m not going to budge on.

Our admins aren’t just dedicated players, they are cherished friends, people whom I trust with the fate of this server. While that is a feeling I certainly bestow upon more of you than just the admins, it is not a sentiment I make much room for typically these days  inside my Grinch-like heart. It’s probably more a haven for banhammer horcuxes in there instead.

Point being, when I start seeing the people we’ve put in charge become frustrated on a regular basis with having to defend policy decisions, I’m going to throw my weight around to defend them. Especially when I know they are defending decisions that are modeled after our core values. If it felt like others on that thread were also jumping in with similar intensity after I said my piece, it’s really only because it’s a position we were already very passionate about as a community centered on these values.

There is a running joke in this group that, for some things, this server is not a democracy, it’s a Chris-ocracy. If you’ve been around for a fair shake, perhaps during more contentious times, you’ve seen me pull a stunt like this before. It’s not meant as a punishment, more of a forced stasis while I figure things out. It’s also why the only people who were really taken aback by this were the newer players.

If you feel like you’ve been around for a good spell and you were thrown off by the events of last week, then you have BBC and Moo to thank for it not happening more often. This is as good a place as any to segue out as I have now come full circle on my point.

We have been on the receiving end of our fair share of criticisms over the years when it comes to this server. We have been told we are too strict, too lenient, too basic, too convoluted, too locked down, too trusting, too heavy-handed, too hands-off, and my all-time favorite in one form or another:

“YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING”

We’ve had at least six separate exoduses (exodii?) resulting in disgruntled ex-players creating spin-offs of this server, many times with large chunks of our player base going with them. All because they were convinced we had it wrong. Not the players necessarily, plenty of folks just wanted to support both servers, but definitely the faction leaders felt that way. You could tell because they all left with fairly vocal abandon. It used to bug me, but after time I realized that it’s honestly fine. Some people move on from this server because they’re unsatisfied with where we plant our feet. And that’s OK. So if you glean from one of us that what we’re hearing is that this place isn’t for you, please take it as a genuine concern for both sides here. Nobody wins with someone who feels chained to our server despite having their two cents shot down more often than they’d like.

I can make peace with an inconsolable difference of opinion, but I’m not spending my days debating the merits of our decisions. Thems the breaks. If there’s functionality you’d like to see that we can add via plugins, I can perhaps take it under advisement if it’s not an immediate “no” but that’s the best I can offer up.

OK now that I’ve bored you with the ramblings of moral ambiguities, let me run through a handful of things that I consider to be in-line with (or against) our “core values”.

We are a Learning Server

Our barriers to entry are meant to be as low as possible, with as much hand-holding as required (without it turning into straight up babysitting) and a structure that favors beginners over experts. We are not, and never will be, a “technical” server. We exercise what I’d like to believe is a sincere amount of restraint and leeway when it comes to contraptions, exploits and adherence to guidelines that are meant to mitigate lag.

Community Courtesy

The above comes with a sense of duty, as a player, for what we consider to be “community courtesy”. This is different than helping another player directly by giving them items (unless they really need it, which obviously we applaud) or otherwise finding ways to ingratiate yourself with them. It means being mindful of how you personally play (meaning with no one else around) that would ensure that the experience is pleasant for as many people as possible, or at least without tricking them into inadvertently fast-forwarding the opportunity they have to get the most out of it.

Exploits are Fine, Until They’re Gone

When I was on for Minecraft Monday a couple months back, and I saw that people had broken through the top of the nether, I know plenty of the veterans could feel my palpable grimace. However I also knew that it wasn’t the first time we’d allowed it, and that if there was an exploit in the current version, there was little I could do about it. So I cringed out loud, but that’s what I do. I knew the admins had a close eye on things, and that was good enough for me.

When Moo got Paper working, with the vast majority of plugins making the migration to boot, that was a huge win for us. The benefit to timings performance was noticeable. The fact that it also fixed some outstanding exploits wasn’t even known to me at the time, but I consider that a bonus. I’m not a fan of exploits. As a server owner and back-end administrator, they offend my sensibilities. If normal functionality is getting bricked by a patch (preventing opening chests or something like that) then that’s one thing. Asking us to go back on a fundamental element of our server that was exhibiting such a marked improvement, just so you could leverage cracked code…well I have to admit it got a little under my skin. And so that conversation went a little off the rails for sure.

I can only blame myself for that though, since I can’t honestly believe that the request would have been made in the first place if everyone was on the same wavelength. So I ask and truly hope that all parties who felt attacked by that thread can accept my apology for that. I don’t speak for everyone of course, but I can assure you that we still have your back, as long as you are still comfortable trusting (or at least respecting) my direction and/or clarification on all this. If so, great. If not, then that’s OK too. But you gotta help me help you here.

So What’s Next?

We’ve had some productive discussions, both between admin team members and with various players who reached out. I’m confident we’re making progress, but there’s a lot of work ahead of us.

Throughout the next week, we’ll be putting the server rules through their paces, cleaning them up to get with the times, and sprucing them up to bring them closer in line with everything we’ve addressed over the past year. We will share these changes with you as they are put in place, but once they are fully finished, we will be asking that everyone re-submit their whitelist request to ensure that they are, at the very least, viewed in the context of having gone to the web page and manually agreeing to them.

Our server rules thus far have become somewhat of a litmus test for me, despite their decrepitude. If you go to Google and type in “minecraft server rules example”, we frequently show up on the first page of results. While I’m not exactly trying to crow here about having bagged a high SERP ranking for a four-word phrase in Google, the traffic that we receive to the website from this phrase suggests to me that, if nothing else, I can look upon our ability to craft a serious set of rules in a favorable light. That’s good enough for me. It also means that it’s important to me that we get this right, so I refuse to rush it. In the meantime, we’ll just keep playing it by ear.

WHEW! And now for the most apt comparison between myself and Captain America…

Thanks for reading all the way to the end ?

Sincerely,
~Serverus

I know I’m not alone in recognizing the dumpster fire that was this past year, so let’s look ahead at some plans for 2021 and try to pretend that none of that other stuff happened.

Extra Life Prizes Are In

Only took me two whole months but hey, better late than never right? If you donated during/after the event to get a copy of AquaNu and you haven’t received it yet, please let me know (Umbra and Helo21, yours are set to go out on Monday morning). For the 1st place winners, your Amazon cards have been sent via email. For 1st and 2nd place winners, your points have been added to SomeAwesome.com, and if you have altogether way too many points and need to spend them on something, perhaps you would like to take a look at our new merch shop…

SAmazon

We only have a few options on here right now, but we’re testing out the functionality and figured, hey you’ve got points to burn, so we’re dropping this now and will be adding stuff to it as 2021 rolls on. Click here to check it out and let us know how we can make it better (you have to be logged in to use it of course).

If you’ve only signed up on SomeAwesome.com recently and you have a Minecraft account whitelisted with us, we’ve added 2000 points to your account to get you started redeeming and reviewing games, so feel free to throw any questions my way (preferably in the Discord if possible, I’m not always on Facebook).

2021 Twitch Schedule

One of our new years resolutions is to try and stick to a real streaming schedule this year, so here we go (all streams start at 9pm EST):

Mondays: Minecraft (obviously)
Fridays: Friday Night Frights (Tonya and I play horror games)
Saturdays: Community Game Night (will be Among Us this weekend but not always)

We’re flirting with the idea of resuming Date Night on Wednesdays too but we’re not holding ourselves to it, trying to stick to three nights a week is already enough for us old folks LOL so we’ll see ?

Discord Channels

One of our initiatives in 2021 will be to expand our base of community games, which requires us to streamline our Discord server a little bit, so here’s the plan. Next Saturday (January 9th) we will be deleting the #aquanu text channel and renaming the #nether_nu text channel to just #minecraft. We will also be adding an #ark channel that will bring with it a new Some Awesome Ark: Survival Evolved community server. This server will use The Island for its map (since it only requires the base game and because Link and I know this map pretty well) so if you’re interested in that we will be releasing more details on that sometimes next week.

Paper Replaces Spigot

Back in my day if you guys were lagging the server I would waggle my finger about your redstone contraptions and cull your herds of animals indiscriminately after a few warnings but Moo is a nicer guy than I am and so instead he has put the Minecraft server on Paper (which is a fork of our previous framework Spigot) because it is magnitudes faster than Spigot and better at detecting lag so thank him for saving you from mass slaughters ?

Also if you see anything out of wack let him know so we can figure out if it has anything to do with the new build.

Otherwise, have a great year people! Can’t be worse than the last one!

/me punches some trees to knock on wood

Thanks,
~Serverus

Hey everyone, how you been? Is 2020 over yet? No? Well I guess I’m back anyway for a bit, not in any official capacity really, just seeing how things are going since I gave Facebook the old heave-ho 5 months ago.

I have to say (a bit ironically I confess) that everyone should consider a hiatus like this from social media, or at the very least Facebook. I know it sounds counter-productive for me to suggest, seeing as how all of you are on there by virtue of it being a rule for server access, but I’m honestly not sure I could’ve handled the last few months without the break. I commend all of you that are still trucking.

Speaking of “all of you”, I see we have some new faces around here, which is great and certainly proof enough to me that handing the reins off to BBC and Moo was a good decision. We can’t thank them enough for picking up the slack, and if nothing else this has demonstrated that it’s OK to put more control of SomeAwesome into the hands of the community. This server has needed fresh blood and fresh eyes for quite some time, we couldn’t be happier with the way it’s turned out.

So like I said above, I’m not really here to throw myself back into Minecraft in any official capacity, but wanted to give you a heads up on some things related to SA and the upcoming Extra Life event, which your team captain Amz has been handling beautifully as well. Thanks Amz!

CLICK THIS LINK TO SIGN UP FOR THE EXTRA LIFE SKYBLOCK CHALLENGE!

AquaNu Flash Drives

In an effort to help the SA team during Extra Life, we will be offering to send out a flash drive with AquaNu on it for a $20 donation made to the SAMC Team Profile during the event. This price includes the drive (which is 64gb now since AquaNu is so freaking big), some SA stickers, shipping, and also copies of the Rush Map and the completed Extra Life Challenge Map.

Once Extra Life is over, the drives will also be available for the same price in the SAMC store, so if you can’t afford one during the event, don’t worry, you’ll still be able to get one eventually.

Some team members are offering great bonuses for donations made to their profiles too so make sure to check out everyone on the team!

Extra Life Twitch Schedule

We will be broadcasting the challenge map on the Twitch channel several times throughout the 24 hours of the event, but between those check-ins we will be streaming a variety of other games as well, including Ark: Survival Evolved, Raft, Phasmophobia, Cuphead, Rocket League, Among Us and yes as per usual, my yearly wee-hours dip into Space Channel 5. More details on full game list and times will be released closer to the event.

What’s Next?

Ultimately, the goal is to dig in my heels over at SomeAwesome.com and focus on getting it off the ground, so my focus needs to be there for a while. In that regard, I will be “available” once again but I have no plans to micromanage what’s happening in the Minecraft group or on the server. I’m convinced that we’ve left it in good hands, and with any luck over at the main site we can each benefit from a rising tide to lift all boats. In the meantime however, I hope you’ll join our team this year for Extra Life, and I raise my cup in reverence to you fine folks.

See you soon!

Our First Hunger Games

Ho Ho. Hey Hey. It’s Our Anniversa-ray

There are days when it doesn’t seem so long ago, hosting this server out of our house, on a dedicated Linux box in the living room, connected directly to the router so it would get the best connection possible to the outside world. Then the horse update came out and it potatoed that box to high heaven, forcing us to switch over to third-party hosting.

The rest is history.

Tomorrow we celebrate lucky number 7. I’m not sure 2020 is quite up to snuff for that label just yet, but what I think we CAN say we’ve been lucky to have is an excellent community, and we hope to have that for many more years to come. So thank you for that. We know this time is tumultuous for everyone, it’s nice to have fine folks like you all around to weather it with. Alright, let’s get into the nitty gritty.

Patreon Updates

I posted in the Facebook group about this but wanted to extrapolate on it here a bit just so everyone knows what they should expect. Basically, we’ve paused the pledge processing on Patreon for April and May, and will more than likely extend that through the summer months, if current models portend.

Rather than strip people of their perks, we’re doubling down on them, giving /fly to current Awesome Tier patrons, and bumping up all other current patrons to Awesome Tier, which means you will get an April lootbox, 10,000 points on SomeAwesome.com, superpickaxe, infinite fireballs (don’t hold one while you’re opening a chest), no-cost /repair including /repair all, full backpack rows, and some things I’m probably forgetting. I know, it’s too OP. That’s just how we’re rolling for now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On top of that, if you’ve ever been a patron in the past but had to cancel, we’re restoring you at whatever highest tier you had previously. All this will continue for the duration of this…craziness.

In an effort to mitigate the cost a little, I’ll be moving AquaNu over to what’s called a “Spot Request” on Amazon Web services. It allows us to cut costs by bidding on server capacity, which means there is a chance that we’ll occasionally get outbid and AquaNu will temporarily go offline, but I’ve gotten pretty good at balancing uptime against reasonable bid prices on the Rush Map, so it should be infrequent. I hope so anyway, I probably just jinxed myself. Either way we can save like $75 a month doing it so we’re giving it a go.

4/20 Steam Run Guy

We’re overdue for one anyway, but this will take place on Monday, April 20th, during the stream, with another one on Saturday, April 25th at 3pm EST. All players are welcome to both events, no signing up necessary, showing up will do just fine.

As per usual, both runs will be populated with over 60 Steam keys each, inside a play area riddled with goodies. Also a play area riddled with traps, mobs, maybe even an Akumo Maze, who knows? There will be plenty of floor cake to celebrate the anniversary ?

Superpickaxe and Fireballs will not be on that day. You had to know that was coming.

Easter Head Hunt

Celebrate Easter with us since you’re not doing it anywhere else! You are hereby invited to next Sunday, April 12th, at noon EST in the holiday area. We’ll also have one the following night for the Twitch stream. I guarantee you it will be better than Animal Crossing’s Easter Event ?

Quick Notes

  • Rush Map is updated to latest snapshot 20w14a
  • We’ve changed the FB group from Secret to Private
  • Command of the Whatever is /workbench and /enderchest
  • Lucky Blocks will be turned off tonight, so use what you’ve got
  • I farted. Sorry. I had tacos.

OK, I think I remember how to do this

I know, it’s been forever. But hey, at least there’s plenty of stuff to talk about. Can you believe that in a couple months it will be our 7th anniversary? I should probably take down the 6th anniversary message on the server login banner. Hoo boy there’s a lot of catching up to do. Let’s get into it.

New Stuff at the Shack

Haven’t changed this up in a while so I’m giving a little love to the shack this week. We’re keeping 4 of the previous options and switching out 6 of them. Here they are:

  • Trenchez: Gives you the Trench Pickaxe, which clears a 3×3 square of (most) blocks. Like the tween cousin of Superpickaxe – $1000 SAMCoin – 24 hour cooldown between purchases
  • Earthz: One of the 4 we left up on the board. Free daily item recycler since they brick themselves so often.
  • Hoez: Gives you a Harvester Hoe. Like an auto-plant scythe. 500 uses – $1000 SAMCoin – 24 hour cooldown between purchases
  • Torchrowz: Another holdover, shoots a torch instead of an arrow, the torch sticks to whatever it hits. Useful for cave reconnaissance – $100 SAMCoin for 10 arrows
  • Clipz: Unbreakable shears with Sharpness 6 – $3000 SAMCoin because they’re basically bling
  • Servbot: If you haven’t gotten one of these yet, now you can buy them from the shack. If you do already have one, don’t try to buy a second one, that won’t work, and will probably take your money anyway – $2000 SAMCoin – One time purchase – Go here for more info on Servbot
  • TPZ: We brought back the Void Bow. Teleport yourself to wherever you shoot – $1000 SAMCoin
  • Catz: Want some cats? Here’s a couple spawn eggs for them. $500 for 2 eggs.
  • Foxes and Pandaz: Last two are holdovers, you can probably guess.

ONE MORE THING – BACK OF THE SHACK

If you go around the other side of the Serverus Shack, we have some chests set up back there. These chests are shops where you can purchase saplings for different types of new special trees. Just plant them in the ground and watch them grow. There are 14 different types, and a couple of them can only be grown on Soul Sand, so keep that in mind. These are $500 SAMCoin apiece and have limited inventory so get them while you can.

Rush Map Updated to 1.16 Snapshot

Sick of bees yet? Well we’re taking the leap to the latest snapshot, which is a pretty beefy update to the Nether. Lots of new blocks, new items, new building items, new biomes, and even a new mob. You will want to make sure that your launcher allows for snapshot installs. This is  checkbox you may need to enable under Installations in your launcher. We will be over here for this week’s episode of Minecraft Monday. You can get there using rush.smaws.me as the server address.

Side note: Spigot doesn’t have a branch for this yet, so we’re using the vanilla snapshot server jar for this, meaning that there is significant chance for lag. We’ve fixed the max player count so we can get more than 10 players on now but it might chug quite a bit if we have too many folks on. Just a heads up.

Rotten Flesh to Leather

I’ve mentioned this on occasion during the streams, but for those of you who do not watch the stream, it may be useful for you to know that you now have a use for that mountain of rotten flesh you’ve kept all these years because you are a hoarder like the rest of us.

Yes…now you can turn that flesh into genuine leather. Sure it might be 9 rotten flesh to one leather, as can be seen in the crafting image above, but what else were you going to do with it? So yeah.

Player Market & Map Gallery

The CMLs have a veritable smorgasbord of maps ready for purchase at the new gallery, located just down the road from the Command Tower, immediately after the Chicken Racetrack, take a right and go through the hill tunnels. Daedalus has asked me to relay the following notes:

  1. Food and drink must stay in the cafe area.
  2. Kaylee the receptionist llama likes a good knock knock joke.
  3. Make sure to check out the bumper boats out back. Extra credit if you can do doughnuts without hitting anything.

KismetFoxfire would like you to know that there are free item frames with each map purchased. See llama for details.

To the left of the gallery you will see a large cleared area. This is where we will have the player market. There is a form at the bottom of this article where you can put in your request for a spot and let us know what you will want to sell.  We will be using signs instead of chests for the individual player shops, so I will be installing these on a case-by-case basis once the requests have been approved.

Quick Notes

So quick. So satisfying.

  • SA Points are in for Patrons
  • Marriage Master is on until the end of the month
  • Check out the stream on Fridays too when we play 7 Days to Die

Market Sign-Up Form

[wpforms id=”2870″ title=”false” description=”false”]

To start off, we’d like to apologize to everyone for the late notice on canceling Minecraft Monday this week. Tonya and I were experiencing one of those days we’ve been occasionally wrapped up in for the last several months and we really needed to prepare for the next morning. The good news is, the next morning went reasonably well. There’s potentially more coming in the next month, and I don’t want to jinx us, but it appears to be getting close to some sort of resolution. Our fingers are crossed anyway.

To make up for it, we’d like to mix things up a bit and have this week’s stream tomorrow night; same Bat-time, same Bat-channel. If you can’t make it, we totally understand, and maybe there are some folks who normally can’t attend who will be able to this week, so let’s give it a shot and see what shakes out.

New Akumoticon Birthday Plan

Two Mondays ago we launched our first week of the Zelda Birthday Gift Donation Twitch Emoji System GO! which had some hiccups since I hadn’t realized that the Akumo emoticon was only available for subscribers. We amended this to include any emoticon posted in the stream instead, but I wanted to offer a new angle that will help boost our final donation to Akumo’s sweet little lady.

So the new plan is this: Any player that posts any emoticon in the Twitch chat during any Minecraft stream (including tomorrow’s) will effectively be donating $1. This is limited to players on the whitelist only, and only once per stream (same as before). However, if you are subscribed to our channel on Twitch, and you use the Akumo emoticon, we will up the amount donated to $5.

Hopefully we see you there tomorrow night!

Patreon Pledges Processed Presently

I like illiteration.

Just a friendly reminder that Saturday is the last day that you can update your Patreon pledge if you need to. Tonya and I will be taking care of rewards on Sunday and Monday, provided the hurricane doesn’t knock our power out. So be on the lookout for those, I’ll make a post in the Facebook group when they’re in.

Another update we’ll be making to Patreon is we’ll be adding FlightPlus access to the Silver Tier. The flight time costs will remain the same, but access to the plugin itself will be limited to patrons on this tier. The reason for this is merely one of practicality and costs. Access to untethered flight means more people traveling quickly over long distances (which impacts the server) and loading more chunks (which we try to mitigate for obvious reasons) so it’s honestly an issue that needs to be addressed before it scales up beyond our control. If it’s any consolation, pledging to the Silver Tier affords you a good amount of points on SomeAwesome.com which you can then convert to SAMCoin that lends to more time you can purchase through FlightPlus.

And I mean hey, write a review for the site and you can earn up to 5000 points per review ?

DefenderCraft

Every other year or so around my birthday I like to throw up the alt server and have a good old few rounds of DefenderCraft. If you’ve never been privy to a DefenderCraft event, here’s a video of the shenanigans we get up to during a typical go.

Since my birthday falls right between the days of the week we normally have events on anyway, it seemed appropriate to schedule it that way again. So we’ll be looking at doing DefenderCraft on both Saturday the 7th of September around 3pm EST as well as Monday night, September 9th at 9:30pm EST. We will stream both events and yes, the emoticon donation system will also be in effect on the 7th too.

If you’re interested, fill out the form below and sign up for a date for DefenderCraft. As per usual, if you’re on Awesome Tier, you are free to attend both events if you’d like.

Quick Notes

  • We’ll be doing an update on Spigot and plugin versions Saturday night
  • Command of the Week Sunday night will be TreeFeller
  • Coming Soon: Use command zone to purchase flight ability on your land
